Josh Bersin: Enterprise Learning and Talent Management
Leadership Development in Talent Management

One of the biggest spending areas in corporate training is leadership development - often defined as management training all the way up to executive education. In fact our data shows that as much as 30% of corporate development dollars go into this segment.

We find that organizations tend to fall into four categories of sophistocation, which we call our Leadership Development Maturity Model (shown below).

While most companies aspire to level 4, we find that the vast majority of organizations are operating at level 1 and 2 and working to get executive support for level 3. It takes an integrated commitment to leadership talent management to reach level 3 - and many L&D organizations are not closely enough aligned to their HR organizations.

Today talent management is changing all this - we believe that more and more organizations will start to re-integrate leadership development throughout the organization to address gaps in leadership talent. As we continue to study this important investment area, we are interested in your thoughts. Where do you think your organization fits and why?
