The Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms that new employment demand for top executives will continue to grow at least at the rate of the average of all occupations through 2012. Yet, over the same term, experts are forecasting a severe shortfall in executive talent, due to boomer-generation retirement, and the exacting new aptitudes for building flexible, innovative, knowledge-based corporations in the global economy. The current state leads many organizations to question: how will they find their next "superstar" manager or executive?

In a flat world, mobility is a top line-item on an executive's resume. An organization must rely on its ability to transplant genius when trouble spots occur, and global assignments are increasingly common among leadership development. Also increasing are the costs of this mobility, and loss of investment is particularly worrisome.
