The Partnership for Public Service reported in 2007 in their bi-annual survey "Where The Jobs Are" that over the next two years federal agencies project that they will need to hire 193,000 new employees for work designated as "mission-critical." These vacancies are primarily focused on work that is aptly described by author Daniel Pink in his book A Whole New Mind as empathic jobs: non-transactional, non-rules based work - work that must be performed by the most creative, high-touch, and intelligent talent possible.
Those with knowledge of and familiarity with the challenges presented by the sheer volume of job openings in a candidate's market know also to be nervous. The necessity of filling these jobs with talented workers would seem insurmountable to any organization. The U.S. Federal Government, the largest conglomeration of employers in America, has the added obstacles of lack of innovative technology and a compelling employment brand, and a looming exodus of retirees. This learning track will focus on the methodology of finding and hiring great talent in the Federal sector.
